How often does mulch need to be redone?

Once a year in most beds. Our rain and the breakdown of bark mean a layer that looked generous in April is thin by the following spring. Spot-weeding a couple of times in summer keeps you from needing a full redo mid-season.

Do you use landscape fabric?

Rarely. Fabric eventually clogs with fines, weeds grow on top of it, and it makes the next mulch job worse. A proper depth of mulch on open soil works better here.

Can you mulch and do a spring cleanup on the same visit?

Yes, and we recommend it. Cleanup first, then mulch, so you are not spreading bark over last winter's leaves.

How a mulching/weed control visit runs

Clear the bed
Weeds pulled, including roots. Old, matted mulch that is sealing off the soil gets loosened or removed.

Recut the edge
A clean trench at the lawn line keeps the new mulch from migrating every time it rains.

Lay and finish
Mulch spread even, pulled back from trunks and stems, and watered in if the forecast is dry.
